First of all, congrats to Matt for winning the contest! I hope you enjoy your prize.

There is some dispute, however, as to who will be providing that prize.

From Rena’s article announcing the winner:

Round of applause to Matt, everybody. I believe Evan is the prize-giver this time around.

That’s news to me! So I went back and looked at the rules (written by Rena):

10) A prize (TBD) will be supplied to the winner. It might involve me shipping a pizza, who knows! Good luck!

So Rena owes the prize, and the rules are set in stone. There’s no way around that!

9) I, as the Rule Czar, withhold the right to append or modify these rules at any time, assuming it is not for a douchey reason. (Douchiness quotient determined by Rule Czar, so I have absolute power here.)

Oh. That.

So tell me, oh virtuous Rule Czar: Are you changing the rules such that I owe Matt a prize? And if so, follow that up with a ruling on whether or not you’re a douche.

Either way, Matt won the prize of having to make the next contest, so I am off the hook for that!

  1. Rule Czar says:

Damn! I think I’m stuck with giving out the prize since I’m fairly certain “trying to avoid giving a prize” is in fact a douchy reason.

I was sort of going off the old pattern of the previous contest winner providing the prize but somehow managed to forget that under that model the new winner also designs the next contest.

So! My ruling: I will provide this prize (TBA) to Matt. Matt will design and post the next contest, and shall award the prize for the next contest.
